POLEMIK SASTERA DARI TASAWUF KE INTERLOK: SASTERA MERENTAS ZAMAN [POLEMICS FROM TASAWUF TO INTERLOK: LITERATURE BEYOND TIME]

Abstract

Malay civilization evolved via literature. Malay civilization has differences and uniqueness compared to other cultures because it has not grown through monuments and bas-reliefs on the walls of the cave; but it grew via the spreading of knowledge. Knowledge in the context of the Malay world is spread through the medium of literature; specifically, through a continuous process spanning hundreds of centuries starting from the era of traditional literature, then modern literature, and finally contemporary literature involving the use of technologies such as the internet, websites, and telephone applications. The greatness of Malay civilization can be seen through literature, and that literary greatness can be seen through series of literature polemics ever happened in the history of Malay literature. Polemics and Malay literature is closely allied. The size of the corpus of Malay literature can be seen through the polemics which lasted across a few centuries. Throughout the evolution of Malay literature, some debate happened across multi-disciplines (cross-discipline), which carries tremendous influence to the Malay literary world. Earliest, the Wahdatul Wujud polemic, then Asas 50, and Islamic literature polemic; representing the 17th and 20th centuries respectively, attracted the attention of the country's literary activists. The phenomenon of literary polemics occurs again in the 21st century; the issue is Interlok. The issue of Interlock has become a public debate; not only among literary activists but also involves groups outside the literary world; involving the public society, including people in the field of politics and education. Those four cross-discipline polemics proves that Malay literature world can not be considered as old-fashioned or absolute. It has a capability to grow, change, and able to adapt external influence outside local literature framework. Through a series of observations of multi polemics that occurred in the history of literature and civilization, we can conclude and accept that Malay literature has long been out of the cocoon of the most basic literature features (per se). In fact, local literature gradually adapting and absorbing the influence of religion, philosophy, education, and politics.

 

Masyarakat Melayu berkembang tamadunnya melalui sastera. Tamadun Melayu mempunyai perbezaan dan keunikan tersendiri kerana ia tidak berkembang melalui tugu-tugu dan juga ukiran-ukiran di dinding gua tetapi berkembang melalui penyebaran ilmu pengetahuan secara meluas. Ilmu pengetahuan dalam konteks masyarakat Melayu disebarkan melalui medium sastera; melalui satu proses berterusan melangkaui ratusan abad bermula dari zaman sastera tradisional, kemudiannya sastera moden, dan akhirnya sastera kontemporari yang melibatkan penggunaan teknologi seperti internet, laman sesawang, dan aplikasi telefon. Jika kehebatan dan gahnya tamadun dapat dilihat melalui sastera, kehebatan dan besarnya sastera pula dapat dilihat melalui polemik-polemik sastera yang pernah berlangsung dalam sejarah sastera Melayu. Polemik dan sastera Melayu erat pertaliannya. Besarnya korpus sastera Melayu dapat dilihat melalui polemik-polemik yang berlangsung melangkaui beberapa abad. Sepanjang evolusi kesusasteraan Melayu, berlaku beberapa polemik merentas disiplin (cross-discipline) yang membawa pengaruh yang amat besar kepada dunia sastera Melayu. Terdahulu, polemik Wahdatul Wujud, ASAS 50, dan sastera Islam mendapat perhatian penggiat sastera tanah air, masing-masing mewakili abad ke-17 dan abad ke-20. Fenomena polemik sastera berlaku lagi pada alaf 21; isunya adalah Interlok. Isu Interlok menjadi perdebatan dan perbantahan umum bukan sahaja dalam kalangan penggiat sastera, malah turut melibatkan orang awam, merangkumi bidang politik dan pendidikan iaitu turut melibatkan kelompok di luar dunia sastera. Keempat-empat polemik yang bersifat merentas disiplin itu membuktikan bahawa dunia sastera Melayu bukanlah bersifat jumud tetapi ia berkembang, berubah, dan berupaya menerima pengaruh luaran yang bersesuaian dengannya. Melalui pemerhatian terhadap siri polemik yang berlaku dalam sejarah sastera dan tamadun Melayu, didapati sastera telah lama keluar dari kepompong sastera per se malah mula menerima pengaruh   agama, aliran falsafah, pendidikan, dan politik.
